What is iLife?

iLife is Apple's lifestyle tools collection. It consists of Garageband (digital music creation package), iMovie (video editing suite), iWeb (easy web page creation), iPhoto (digital photo management and editing) and iDVD (a DVD-creation tool). Most of these tools are really useful and perfect for the beginner as well as amateur.

Apple also offers professional-level equivalent software for each of the different iLife applications. So if you feel Garageband is a bit too restrictive, Logic Express would be the next step up. Ditto for iMovie (Final Cut Express is the big brother to this) and iPhoto (See: Aperture).

If you've purchased a new Mac, you might already be familiar with some of the iLife applications, since they come pre-installed with all new Macs. Standalone versions of OS X, the Mac operating system, don't ship with iLife in the box - for that, you'll have to pick it up for around $80.
