How can I convert a WMA file to MP3?
Whoa there, first thing's first: where did you get the files? If you got the files from a friend who bought some music and wants to share them with you - naughty, naughty – things don’t look so rosy, we’re afraid.
See, WMA (which stands for Windows Media Audio) is a Microsoft file format for music, but there is a chance that the files are equipped with digital rights management (more commonly referred to as DRM), which is just a fancy way of saying "copy protection." Why didn’t they just say so in the first place?
Removing the copy protection, while possible, could get us into trouble, should we detail the process. It could also get you into trouble, since it's illegal. In short, don't copy music you don't own. Instead, check out our recommendations for where you can download music legally. Now that we have that out of the way...
To convert the files to MP3 format, what you want is an application called Switch, which comes as a free version or a more powerful premium version for under $20. Conveniently, it’s available for both Mac and PC!
Open the application, drag your files to the main window and click “convert”. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can adjust the sound quality options, too.
Just a note: since WMA is already a compressed format, converting it to MP3 might result in unwanted loss of quality. For the best results, try and get a hold of the original audio source, or CD, and convert it to MP3 from the get-go. Failing that, use a higher quality when converting from WMA to MP3. Happy listening!
