Should I get a DSLR or a point-and-shoot digital camera?
The proper way to phrase this question is: “Do I really need a DSLR?” The reason is that unless you have one specific need and don’t mind a handful of inconveniences, the answer is probably, “no.” So, let’s get to it:
You should get a DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex, if you always wondered what that stood for) if you need/want:
- the flexibility of interchangeable lenses.
You should NOT get a DSLR if you don’t want to deal with:
- the extra complexity
- the extra size
- the extra weight
- the extra expense
Many people think that to take better pictures they need a DSLR. The truth is, despite the fact that good pictures depend more on who’s holding the camera than the camera itself, today’s point-and-shoot cameras offer all the camera most people will ever need, from a quality point of view, and are easier to use and less cumbersome than DSLRs.
Here are a few Degeeked point-and-shoot camera recommendations:
- Entry-level: Canon Powershot SD750
- Mid-level: Nikon Coolpix S600
- High-end: Canon G10
That said, if you really do want a DSLR, stick with either a Canon or a Nikon, and check out our top 10 DSLRs list.
