Is it safe to restart my computer when it locks up? How about CTRL-ALT-Delete?

Restarting your computer will not hurt the machine itself, but it can cause you to lose documents you were working on when your machine froze. If you are confident that everything you are working on is saved, you are probably safe to reboot.

If you computer has been unresponsive for five minutes, chances are it will remain that way. In this case, you may have to use the "three-fingered salute" of pressing the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete buttons all at the same time. (If you're on a Mac, the same thing is accomplished by holding Option, Command, and Esc all at the same time.) This will allow you to quit applications that are not responding or reboot the machine entirely.

If even this doesn't work, find the power button on the computer, and hold it in. This usually forces a restart of the machine.

If all else fails, a solution of last resort (we do NOT recommend doing this) is to simply unplug the computer's power cord and start the computer back up again.
