Is it safe to shop online?
These days, shopping online may be safer than using your card at a store. Millions of people shop online with no issues or problems at all. That said, shopping online can be intimidating at first glance. A few small considerations will keep you safe:
- Use popular sites and sites well-known to you. For most general purpose items, DeGeeked recommends Amazon.com.
- If in doubt, use sites connected to "real world" stores such as Sears, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.
- Look for the picture of the unbroken key or closed lock in the status bar at the bottom of your browser window. Either one indicates that the data security is operative. A broken key or any open lock indicates it is not.
- Look to see if the web address on the page that asks for your credit card information begins with "https" instead of "http." A way to remember this is to say to yourself, the "s" stands for "security."
