Should I buy a laptop or a desktop computer?

In general, you’ll get more bang for your buck out of a desktop. At the same price point, you’ll get a bigger hard drive (more space for photos, music), more memory (software runs faster), and better video card (can support big monitors and play games and movies without a hitch) than you will get in a laptop. Plus, if you’re the type to keep stuff for a long time, you will be able to upgrade and add on to a desktop much more cheaply and easily than a laptop.

Portability is really the driving factor behind a laptop purchase. If you want to use your computer on your couch, or if you travel a lot, a laptop is for you.

Keep in mind, though, that the very portability of laptops can also lead to a shorter lifespan, since all the high-tech components will be subjected to the jolts, changes in temperature, etc. of being carted around. On average, we’ve found that laptops last about half as long as desktops do.

So, here are the Degeeked Mac & PC recommendations under each category:

Laptops:

Mac: Apple Macbook

PC/Windows: Sony Vaio

Desktops:

Mac: Apple Mac Pro

PC/Windows: HP Pavilion
