My laptop gets really hot when I use it. Is there any way to keep it cooler?

Yes, and you're wise to look for something to keep your laptop from getting so hot. Heat is a chief reason laptops usually don't last as long as their desktop counterparts, as the high temperatures fry the sensitive internal components. There are two products you might want to look into to offer your precious laptop some relief.

One, the Xpad Laptop Cooler and Heatshield, uses no power or fans, and simply raises your laptop up off your worksurface cooling it passively by letting air pass under it. The advantage with this one is that it's simple to use, is lightweight, and is pretty much indestructible.

If you want a little more bang for your buck, there are laptop coolers that offer both fan-cooled systems and multi-port USB hubs (allowing you to connect more external USB items such as hard drives or cameras). One such product is the Efforcity Chill Pad, which goes one further and throws in a 16-in-1 media card reader. The catch with all these extras is that it is a bit less portable than the Xpad.
