Top 10 Gifts for DSLR Owners - 2008
We recently read reports that DSLR sales are up 40%. The reason? Lower prices. That's great news, of course, but this also means there are a lot of new DSLR owners out there just itching to get cool accessories as gifts this holiday season.
Do we have any ideas for what to get a new DSLR owner? We never thought you'd ask, but first, some tips on buying for the new DSLR owner in your life:
- Find out which DSLR they have. Many accessories, lenses especially, only work with a certain brand or camera.
- Find out what other accessories they have. No one likes to make a trip to the mall to return stuff.
- Find out what kind of shooting they like to do. This can often help lead you in the right direction of the perfect gift.
Once you've done your research, check out some of these great gifts any DSLR owner would love:
- Joby GP3 Gorillapod SLR-Zoom Flexible Tripod for Digital SLR Cameras
- The Digital Photography Book
- Manfrotto 685B Neotec Monopod Deluxe with Safety Lock
- LensPEN Lens Cleaning System
- Crumpler 5 Million Dollar Home Shoulder Photo Bag
- Manfrotto 725B Digi Tripod with Integrated Ball Head and Carrying Bag
- Sekonic L-308s Light Meter
- Subscription to Shutterbug Magazine
- Adobe Photoshop Elements 7
- Western Digital My Passport Essential 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive
We didn't want to add an eleventh item to the list, but if none of those items seems right for the DSLR owner you know, let them decide on their own with a gift card from Amazon.com. You know they'll like that!

Gotta disagree on the bag. I think the Slingshot series from Lowepro are much better.

@Jeff - Good call. We actually considered putting the Slingshot 100 on this list, but we included the Crumpler for a handful reasons:
- it’s cheaper (ok, only slightly, but still...)
- it’s cooler looking (comes in multiple colors, too)
- it doesn’t look like a camera bag, which is important both from a style and a safety perspective
- it’s multi-purpose (take the separators out, and it’s a normal shoulder bag)
- it’s lighter and not as bulky
Both have cool names, though, so that’s a toss up.

I love my 5 Million dollar Crumpler for all the reasons you listed above. Also have Lowepro bag, but don’t use it nearly as often. I got my DSLR about a year ago and have 5 out of ten items on the list! I am on my way.
