What is a PDF file? How is a PDF different?

PDF is short for Portable Document Format. Coined by Adobe back in the early 90's, PDF is the most popular document file format used on the web today. Used for everything from brochures to invoices, PDF's allow for much fewer compatability issues than other formats and offer high-quality printouts, especially for text.

A key benefit of PDF's is their smaller file size. For instance, a Microsoft Word document exported as a PDF can be half or 1/4 the size of the orginal file.

If you are emailing a document, converting it to a PDF first is a good idea, especially if you do not need or want the recipent to have the ability to edit it.
