What should I do with my old computer now that I got a new one?

If you're the lucky owner of a new computer, please don't throw your computer away. Not only might it be illegal (there are lots of harmful chemicals inside your computer), there are a couple other really good options.

This might be your chance to do something nice for someone else. Reformat your hard drive (to erase all your old files), and pass the computer along to a local charity (or poor college student) of choice. They'll be able to get value out of most older computers.

Another option is to recycle your old computer. Most local public works departments offer electronics recycling drop-off points or special days where they will accept old computers, monitors, and other electronics. Many retailers will also now take your old computer and recycle it for you. Metech International is a reputable company that offers recycling for both Apple and and all other electronic equipment.
